Spindle Making Tools
Spindle Making Tools, June 2010
This is the mast completed before varnish. On the chair is all the tools I used to make the spindle. You can see in this pic the hole pattern I used to find the "lumps" that still needed more chiselling to get closer to the spindle shape.
Weekender Grab Hand Rails
Hand Grab Rails, June, 2010
Two hand rails I made from the description given in the plans. I might make a couple more if the deck seems to lack places to hang on.
Wall Storage, June 27, 2010
To make room for keel, bottom and deck building, I had to store the finished parts somewhere. In the house was not a real option since we're also doing a bit of remodelling. Garage walls is off the floor and out of the way.
Ceiling Storage, June 27, 2010
The ceiling and shelf over the garage door also is a good out of the way place to store parts, especially the spars.
New Rudder Hinge, July 18, 2010
I had a bolt and rubber tube for this but I didn't want to carry wrenches sailing so I made an alternative hinge/pivot. The washers were made from 1/4 inch oak "scants" and cut with a 3" hole saw for the outer ring and a 7/8 inch spade bit for the inner hole. Kinda cool.
Sander Vac, July 2010
Attaching the shop vac to the sander cut down on 90% of the dust from all the sanding of Bondo and wood. I eventually changed the tape to Duct Tape instead of the metal tape. (Lasted longer) Why didn't I think of this at the beginning!
Epoxy Glue/Paste, July 25, 2010
We got the epoxy from a local commercial supplier. He suggested their strongest formulation, a two part paste, mixed 1:1 base and activator. You can see from this image how stiff this stuff really is. We used it for all structural joints. Working time was not long in the Florida Summer heat, about 30 minutes.
Garage Lights, July, 2010
One light bulb in the middle of the garage ceiling just wasn't enough. This home made light bar fills the bill. Need extra light? just pull the switch strings and add more, up to the equivalent of 450 watts!
